  • 2 min read

Are you thinking of trying backpacking for the first time, but not sure where to start? This guide will give you all the tips and information you need to get started, as well as a list of must-have outdoor gear. So pack up your bag, and let's explore the great outdoors!

Sun protection gear

Having sun protection during your trips is a must! Otherwise, you’ll be going home with a whole lot of sunburn.

  • Sun hat. Opt for sun hats with a 3-inch wide brim for better coverage.
  • Sunglasses. Look for shades with a UV 400 label.
  • Sunscreen. Pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 50+ sun protection.
  • First aid kit

Accidents can be an inevitable part of some backpacking trips. Make sure that you bring a first aid kit with you.

    Extra food and water

Ensure that you have more than enough food and water to last the whole duration of your backpacking trip. If your trip lasts longer than anticipated, you’ll still have the supplies you need.

    Knife

Knives are needed for several activities including food prep, first aid, and several others.

    Tools to make fire

In case of emergencies, you need tools that can help you make a fire quickly. You may want to keep a fire starter that you can quickly ignite and can keep the heat for several seconds.

    Headlamp

Headlamps are important as they also keep your hands free as you move about in the dark.

    Navigation tools

Being able to have the tools to navigate your way through the backcountry is crucial. The must-haves include a compass, a map, and a GPS.
